Read below for more details on Challenge Bowl participation. What are the requirements to participate? Contestants should be student members of SEG and may be at the graduate or undergraduate level. What does a team consist of? Each team consists of 2 players who are usually from the same university. What types of questions are asked? The contest itself is in the form of a short answer/multiple choice quiz in the geosciences (geology, geophysics, geography and some geodesy), as well as some questions about the history of our science and the SEG itself. Questions will range in difficulty from 2nd or 3rd year undergraduate level to perhaps first year graduate school. How does the contest work? The contest will consist of 3 legs of 3 rounds each—9 rounds in total. All teams participate in the first leg, after which the 4 teams with the lowest cumulative score on the first 3 rounds retire leaving the 4 top teams to continue playing. After the second leg of 3 rounds, the 2 teams with the lowest cumulative score on the second leg only (not including the first leg scoring) retire leaving the top 2 teams to compete in the final 3 rounds. Scoring is reset for each leg rather than being carried over between legs. How do I sign up to participate? There are currently no upcoming Challenge Bowl events on the calendar. It also gave me a very strong line for the resume which potential recruiters value a lot. The entertaining and competitive manner in which the contest is organized I think evokes both competition and collaboration spirits in the hearts of the students." —Grigoriy Perov, University of Houston "The SEG Challenge bowl is an important event. Participating in this event, I have had the opportunity to meet students and professionals of different countries, interchange ideas and experiences, and learn of each other. I also realized that my career (geosciences) is an international career and that there are a lot of opportunities to develop it." —Lorena Suarez, Universidad Simon Bolivar | | Persons who are interested in hosting a regional competition must complete an application form.
