Electronic submission, formats, and production costs for magazine advertising File formats: We use graphic files with the extension .tif (tagged image format TIF) or .eps (encapsulated postscript EPS) in producing The Leading Edge and Geophysics. Files that we may be able to convert into these formats include .ps, .pdf, .pict, .gif, and .jpg. Figures embedded in Microsoft Word documents can be extracted but the quality depends on resolution of the original figures placed in the Word document. TIF images saved using the LZW compression option often result in streaks appearing in the ad when it goes to press. Please save all TIF images without the LZW compression option. Microsoft PowerPoint figures will be either exported as JPEG images and converted into TIF images, or they will be converted into PDF format and then converted into TIF or EPS files. We only accept "press" quality .pdfs, 300 dpi CMYK or gray scale .tif or .eps files with text converted to outlines/curves. Native application files are not accepted. PMS colors must be indicated. Resolution/Color: Make sure your graphic files are created in at least 300-dpi (dots per inch) resolution. You may also see this listed as ppi (pixels per inch). It refers to how many dots are used to create the image. A higher number of dots (300 or more) per inch means the image will look sharper when printed. Lower resolutions such as the common 72-dpi Internet jpeg formats will look jagged and fuzzy when printed in the magazine. Color formats should be designated as CMYK. If your image is in RGB format, it will be converted and some change in color may result. B/W images are acceptable. .zip archives are acceptable. We also accept CD ROMs. Files may be uploaded to our FTP site. Contact Mel Buckner for more information. |
